CHANDIGARH: The case of a couple who entered into an interfaith match and moved the Punjab and Haryana high court seeking protection from the girl’s kin has taken a new turn, with another woman approaching the HC claiming to be the legally-wedded wife of the Haryana man. The original petitioners are a Muslim girl, 16, from Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh who had married a Hindu man from Haryana as per Muslim rites.
In her application filed before the HC, the applicant, Jaya Phogat of Charkhi Dadri, has sought directions to implead her as a party in this case and to initiate criminal proceedings against her ‘husband ‘ Naveen for misleading the court and filing a false affidavit. The matter would come up for hearing on Thursday.
In her plea, the woman applicant has submitted that she had got married to the petitioner on February 22, 2019, at a hotel in Charkhi Dadri. The function was attended by around 500 guests from both sides and costly gifts were given to the ‘groom’s’ family She has also claimed that they were happily married.
