Two police officers from West Bengal have moved the Calcutta high court against coercive action after the Worli police registered a FIR against them on a complaint of extortion by Mumbai-based businessman Jitendra Navlani.

Worli police had registered a case against the two policemen and two others from West Bengal on allegations of threatening and extorting Rs 20 lakh from Navlani.

Navlani had alleged that the extortion demand began with a Rs 3.02 crore seizure by Bengal police during a nakabandi in Ranigunj in Kolkata in May. The police had said the money belonged to Navlani’s company Bonanza Fashion Merchants Pvt Ltd, which has its registered office in Kolkata.

Navlani claimed that he learnt about the details of the case when his wife was stopped at Mumbai airport based on a lookout notice issued at the instance of West Bengal police.

The police officers, Rajarshi Banerjee and Sudip Dasgupta, have alleged that the Navlani complaint is intended “to harass, humiliate and intimidate the investigating officer.” The officers contended that the allegation had been made in a calculated and motivated manner to derail the investigation against Navlani’s company.
