Madras high court on Thursday sought response from the state government on a plea, which sought to ensure proper maintenance of Yanaimalai situated at Y Othakadai in Madurai district.

A division bench of Justice R Mahadevan and Justice J Sathya Narayana Prasad sought the response, while hearing a public interest litigation filed by G Thirumurugan, a resident of Ramanathapuram district.

The petitioner stated that Jain beds and Tamil Brahmi inscriptions are found on the Yanaimalai hill, which is one of the heritage sites in Madurai.

He stated that there is no proper pathway to trek to the top of the hill. The rugged pathway lacks safety due to the absence of side fencing due to which people visiting the site are facing difficulties. This apart, there are also no basic facilities such as drinking water, toilets, lights for the visitors.

The petitioner stated that though Yanaimalai is one of the important heritage sites, it is not being maintained properly. Though he had submitted representation to the authorities seeking to ensure proper maintenance of the site, no steps were taken. Hence, the petitioner moved the HC Madurai bench seeking to renovate the pathway to Yanaimalai and to protect the Jain beds and inscriptions.
