The special PMLA court in Ranchi on Friday allowed the enforcement directorate (ED) to interrogate jailed chartered accountant, Suman Kumar, in connection with a case related to the MGNREGA scam and money laundering.

Kumar was the chartered accountant of suspended IAS officer Pooja Singhal’s husband Abhishek Jha. All of them are accused in the case.

The court gave the direction after hearing the argument of ED’s special prosecutor Atish Kumar. The ED’s petition was, however, opposed by Kumar’s advocate.

Sources said Kumar is to be interrogated inside the jail premises on Saturday and Sunday.

Earlier on May 6, the ED had raided the residence of Singhal and Kumar in Ranchi and other parts of the country. The agency had seized Rs 19.31 crore from Kumar’s office and residence.

The ED had arrested Kumar on May 7 following which the court remanded him in the custody of the agency for 14 days.

Kumar has also filed a discharge petition in the court. The hearing on the petition is scheduled for December 1.

In another development, the ED has summoned Vishal Choudhary, a businessman who reportedly has connections with those in the state government, to appear before its zonal office in Ranchi on November 28 for interrogation.

Choudhary and his wife were detained at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on Thursday as they were about to leave for Thailand. Subsequently, the ED officials handed him the summons, sources said.

The agency ED had raided Choudhary’s residence and office in the Argora police station area of Ranchi on May 24. After conducting searches and interrogations till late evening, Choudhary was let free. He had subsequently disappeared leading the ED to issue a lookout notice against him.
