AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat high court on Friday permitted the BJP candidate from Viramgam constituency and former convenor of the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), Hardik Patel, to enter the Mehsana district for one year after the state government said that it had no objection if the restriction was removed.

He was barred from entering the district as a bail condition imposed by a sessions court while granting bail to him in a criminal case, in which he was convicted to two-year imprisonment by a Visnagar court for attacking on the office of present health minister Rushikesh Patel while taking out a rally of the Patidar youths in 2015 demanding OBC reservation for the community. He was convicted in 2018 and this conviction prevented him from contesting the 2019 general elections. Later, the Supreme Court stayed the conviction.

Since 2018, Patel has been prohibited from entering Mehsana district, and he has filed an application in the HC for permanently deleting this condition. This petition is pending and will be heard in January 2023.

Meanwhile, Patel filed another application through advocate Rafik Lokhandwala requesting the court to suspend the condition for one year. He submitted that being a leader in the BJP and as the state assembly elections are approaching, Patel would be required to visit places in Mehsana. Besides, he needs to visit the Umiya Mata temple.

The state government, which was vehemently opposing Patel’s applications for permission to enter Mehsana when he was a Congress party leader, consented to his request on Friday. Justice S H Vora suspended the bail condition for one year as prayed for.

Mehsana district has a sizable population of the Patidars and the Patidar quota stir started from this district.
