MADURAI: The Madras high court on Tuesday sought a response from the state on a plea which sought to complete the construction of an overbridge on the Ramanathapuram – Keelakarai Road in Ramanathapuram district.

A division bench of justice R Mahadevan and justice J Sathya Narayana Prasad was hearing a PIL filed by G Thirumurugan, a resident of Ramanathapuram district.

The petitioner stated that a railway crossing gate is located near the Ramanathapuram railway station. Since the railway gate is located in an important place in the town, there was traffic congestion when the railway gate was closed for passing trains. So, the residents urged the government to construct an overbridge in the area.

In 2018, the state government announced the construction of an overbridge and allotted 23.9 crore. The total length of the bridge would be 675.56m and with a width of 11m. The foundation stone was laid in 2018 and the work was planned to be constructed within two years.

The petitioner stated that due to slow pace of work, the construction of the bridge is yet to be completed. He stated that he had submitted a representation to complete the construction of the bridge swiftly in order to prevent traffic congestion, however, the same was not considered. Hence, the petitioner moved the HC Madurai bench seeking relief.
