Madurai: The Madras high court on Friday sought response from the government on a plea which wanted revival of a damaged water channel to bring water from the Vaigai to Paravai irrigation tank.

A division bench of Justice R Mahadevan and Justice J Sathya Narayana Prasad was hearing a public interest litigation plea filed by A Antonydoss, a retired government employee and resident of Paravai.

According to the petitioner, the Paravai tank is one of the biggest in Madurai district. The major source of water for the tank is the Vaigai. However, the water channel connecting the river and the tank suffered damaged during the floods in 1979. Hence, water could not reach the tank and agricultural activities were affected. The government had allotted funds for the construction of a check dam across the Vaigai between Thenur and Kodimangalam to bring water after reviving the damaged water channel to the Paravi tank. However, there has been no development as regards the construction of the check dam.

The petitioner also said that though the tank received water in 2020, 2021 and 2022 due to excess rainfall and overflow from the nearby tanks, the tank would reach full capacity only if it receives water from the Vaigai. Storage of water in Paravai tank would not only benefit agricultural activities but also increase groundwater level in the locality.

Hence, the petitioner moved the Madurai bench, seeking a direction to construct a check dam across the Vaigai between Thenur and Kodimangalam villages and to revive the damaged water channel.
